Suzuki RM100 2003

 

 

The all-new RM100 is immediately identifiable with its aggressive, symmetrical styling in Suzuki Champion Yellow and features a high-revving, 99cc reed-valve engine equipped with an exhaust-port valve and tuned for maximum mid-range power and torque.

Like the other RM models, the RM100 is liquid-cooled and uses a composite-plated aluminum alloy cylinder, which improves heat transfer and allows closer piston-to-cylinder clearance for better sealing and more power. A special concave finish on the exhaust port and intake port bridges reduces piston scuffing for improved durability.

The exhaust-port valve matches port timing to engine rpm, broadening the power band. A Keihin PWK28 carburetor features a semi-flat slide that combines the best features of a flat-slide and a round-slide carburetors, matching a round slide’s smooth operation with a flat-slides smoother airflow through the venturi, delivering sharper throttle response. The airbox features a large cut-out on one side and carries an oiled-foam air filter. The reed valves are made of carbon-fiber with the fiber strands precisely aligned at 45 degrees and the thickness precisely controlled at 0.42mm, producing quicker throttle response at low and mid-range rpm. And the CDI ignition system’s spark timing is designed to work best with the semi-flat-slide carburetor.

The exhaust system silencer uses a layer of steel wool between the baffle core pipe and the glass-wool packing material, extended the service interval between repacking. And wide, dual O-rings on the head pipe improve sealing to the cylinder head, increase durability and ease installation.

The RM100’s six-speed transmission features ratios carefully matched to the power band, with hardened shift forks. The large-diameter clutch rides on needle roller bearings, and is operated by a smooth rack-and-pinion system designed to produce a light lever pull. A separate engine cover allows access to the clutch without removing the water pump, and transmission oil level can be easily checked using a sight window.

The RM100 uses a dual-cradle high-tensile-steel perimeter-tube frame, with backbone tubes running around each side of the engine, directly from the steering head down to the swingarm pivot plate. The perimeter design allows the fuel tank to be carried lower, between the backbone tubes, lowering the center of gravity and improving turn-in.

The 36mm leading-axle cartridge front forks feature adjustable compression damping and deliver 275mm of wheel travel. An extruded aluminum-alloy swingarm works with a progressive linkage and a fully-adjustable rear shock, delivering 275m of wheel travel. The shock itself features fully adjustable preload, four compression damping positions (clicks) and 16 rebound damping positions (clicks).

The 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels carry a 70/100-19 front tyre and 90/100-16 rear tyre, and the rear wheel hub features two bearings on the sprocket side for increased durability.

The 220mm front disc brake carries a dual-piston caliper controlled by a high-leverage master cylinder. The 184mm rear disc brake uses a single-piston caliper. The forged-aluminum rear brake pedal rides on a double-sealed pivot.

Chassis details include wide, cast-steel foot pegs with thick mounting brackets and aluminum-alloy chain adjuster blocks.

Suzuki made a model called RM100 already in the seventies and early eighties, but here's the 21st century version of the small motocrosser.

”This new mid-size motocross model that bridges the gap between mini-class models and full-size 125 and 250 models. The high-revving, liquid-cooled engine has emphasis on low-to-mid rpm power while retaining excellent top-end power.”

The 2003 RM100 was actually a Kawasaki KX100 with yellow plastic as part of the Kawasaki-Suzuki alliance. Other shared models were the DR-Z110 (Kawasaki KLX110), the RM65 (Kawasaki KX65), the DR-Z125 (Kawasaki KLX125), the DR-Z400 (Kawasaki KLX400) and they jointly developed the RM-Z 250/KX-F 250. Suzuki designed the engine and Kawasaki did all the leg work, which explains how it acts nothing like any other Suzuki.

2007 saw Suzuki's own RM-Z250, which has garnered critical acclaim for it's razor sharp handling, "better than anything ever built" (Motocross Action Online).

Faithful to their "race-breed performance" moto, Suzuki relies on their data from weekends at the racetrack to improve on their existing models. This is especially true in the motorcross / off-road world of motorcycles, where Suzuki's RM-Z 450 and 250 models are dominating across all expert classes.

But Suzuki never leaves the youth behind, and continues the youth-inspired line of RM85 dirt bikes for 2011. From motor to suspension to looks, the 2011 is designed as the stepping stone for future MX / SX stars.

Engine Features:

The RM85's high-revving 84.7cc, 2-stroke, liquid-cooled, reed-valve engine has a bore and stroke of 48.0mm x 46.8mm. The cylinder features Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) for durability, weight reduction and effective heat transfer for superior class performance.
A Keihin PE28 carburetor provides smooth throttle response and is designed for simplified maintenance.
The exhaust valves are made of aluminum to best match the expansion rate of the cylinder itself, improve sealing.

Chassis Features:

A tubular steel frame and thick wall aluminum swingarm provides class-leading performance on the track, especially in the corners. The frame was designed for increased rigidity, durability and straight-line performance; it features large diameter tubing in key areas and a large front reinforcement plate.
Showa 37mm inverted front forks are completely adjustable for rider weight, style and ability. The forks feature a cartridge damping system with fully-adjustable rebound damping and 20-way adjustable compression damping (also included are fork guards to protect the inner fork tubes). The front forks offer 275mm (10.8-inches) of travel.
A Showa rear shock absorber, with large diameter shock body, is designed and properly valved to produce a plush feel and increase bottoming resistance. The Showa rear shock provides 277mm (10.9-inches) of wheel travel.
The RM85 comes with a twin-piston caliper front brake with 220mm (8.7-inches) large-diameter disc and a rear brake with 200mm (7.9-inches) disc to provide excellent braking performance.
The RM85 also comes with a light, narrow-diameter front and rear brake hose. The font brake hose is routed behind the fork leg, eliminating the need for a brake hose cover, which helps reduce weight.
A rigid rear brake caliper provides reliable braking performance, long pad life and is easy to maintain.
A plastic rear brake caliper guard reduces the possibility of deformation and saves weight as well.
The RM85's forged aluminum-alloy rear brake pedal gives the rider accurate braking feel.
The RM85's footpegs are made of cast chrome-molybdenum steel, instead of stamped steel, which makes them more durable with better grip.
A long clutch lever makes it easy to accurately locate and work the engagement point during starts and when clutching off at corners.
Each side of the RM85's seat has textured surface for better knee gripping.

Transmission Features:

The RM85 is equipped with a smooth shifting six-speed transmission. The transmission features a fully worked-out shift mechanism including a strong shift-drum detent spring and needle bearing on the left side of the shift drum. A knurled shift-pedal tip delivers excellent grip and shift feel.

Suzuki RM85L 2003—

 

 

 

The RM85 already dominates its class and is the choice for young up-and-comers like Davi Millsaps and Nico Issi.

For 2003 there’s a new big-wheel version for larger kids, with 19 and 16-inch front and rear wheels versus the standard version’s 17 and 14-inch front and rear wheels. Like its bigger brothers, the RM85 features aggressive styling in bright Suzuki Champion Yellow with white number plates, ready for racing numbers.

The RM85’s high-revving, 48x46.8mm, 84.7cc reed-valve engine, already completely redesigned, makes more than enough power and torque to be competitive, with dual one-piece oval-shaped exhaust-port valves for improved low-rpm power. Like its bigger brothers, the RM85 has an aluminum-alloy cylinder bore plated with Suzuki’s own race-proven nickel-phosphorus-silicon-carbide coating (SCEM, or Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material). SCEM is lighter, lasts longer and transfers heat better than a conventional cast-iron cylinder liner, allowing closer piston clearance for better sealing and more power.

Big-end bearing thrust-washers add to crankshaft durability and reduce engine vibration, and the Keihin PE28 carburetor not only deliver smooth throttle response but also is designed to be easily rejetted. A radiator off the RM125 keeps the RM85 cool despite its class-leading performance.

The RM85’s single-backbone, double-cradle frame is made of high-tensile-strength steel tubing with inverted cartridge front forks and an extruded aluminum-alloy single-shock swingarm. Front fork compression and rebound damping are adjustable, with 20 compression damping positions (clicks) and three turns of rebound damping adjustment. The rear shock is fully adjustable for spring preload with four compression damping positions (clicks) and 16 rebound damping positions (clicks). Front wheel travel is 275mm and rear-wheel travel is 278mm.

While the RM85 and big-wheel RM85L share the same engine and frame, there are detail chassis changes to accommodate the RM85L’s larger wheels. The RM85L has a longer swingarm (512mm versus 482mm), and a longer wheelbase (1280mm versus 1240mm).

New model for 2002 for the smaller motocross motocross enthusiastics, replacing the RM80. The RM80 has been around for some time, and RM85 shares is the successor of the 80cc model. Disc brakes in both ends, liquid-cooled single cylinder two-stroke AETC equipped engine, rigid aluminum craddle frame, progressive suspensions. 70/100-17 (front) and 90/100-14 (rear) wheels. A high-wheel kit (from 2003 offered as a different model called RM85L) is available as an option.

By 1983, the RM80H was the only 80cc motocross bike with higher wheels. While the standard version of the Suzuki RM80 had 17-inch front wheel and 14-inch rear wheel, the RM80H had 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear wheel and longer swing.

Many improvements. The 1984 RM80XE got a new, stronger frame but no importand measurements were changed. The wheels had received straight spokes to increase endurance. The bike has lost some weight, especially behind the engine, the exhaust is now made of aluminum. The carburetor is Flat-side type creating better response. The mid-range torque has been improved (larger exhaust chamber and altered port timing) and the gear ratios (six speeds) are now closer together.
